It is YOU, the parents and older siblings of our players, that keep the Home School Soccer League operating each season. The Board of Directors greatly appreciate all your dedication and hard work. We pledge with your help to do all we can to keep Player Fees as low as possible and the behind-the-scenes operations running smoothly.
The cost of coaches continues to be one of our greatest expenses each season. In order to encourage you to step into a coaching role, we present here the responsibilities and rewards that go with those positions. Unless other arrangements are made, coaches must attend a brief Coaches' meeting on the Thursday prior to the start of season in order to pick up their team bags and learn the procedures that will be in place for the first day.
HEAD COACHES take on the responsibility for a particular team, supervising their players, setting up soccer drills and coaching/referee’ing during game play each week. Unless they have prior coaching or a great deal of soccer playing experience, Head Coaches usually will have served as an Assistant Coach in previous seasons. In exchange for coaching, these coaches are given a gold coach’s T-shirt and ALL of the Head Coach’s children play for FREE (minus player T-shirt fees).
ASSISTANT COACHES work within a particular team, overseeing player sign-in, handling the team’s warm up & stretching, and assisting the Head Coach with drills and game play each week. In exchange for coaching, these coaches are also given a gold coach’s T-shirt and up to TWO of the coach’s children play for FREE (minus player T-shirt fees). Any other children are charged $15 to cover insurance costs.
HSSL Table Manager is responsible for handling administrative duties at the field. These include player check-in and handing out Admittance Cards on the first day of the season, answering questions about field assignments and HSSL procedures, lost and found, organizing non-coaching volunteers at the field, seeing that all coaches check-in and that fields are covered, and disbursing checks to paid coaches. They also work with the Popsicle Lady to insure that popsicles are available for players after game play each week and hand out pizza on our last day. This volunteer must see that someone is at the Table during the entire 2-hours that we play. In exchange for managing the table and other volunteers, the Table Manager is given a Teal Volunteer T-shirt and up to TWO of the Manager’s children play for FREE (minus player T-shirt fees). Any other children are charged $15 to cover insurance costs.
HSSL Table Assistant helps the Table Manger run the HSSL table, and either mans the table or runs errands as needed for the Manager.
Popsicle Lady has the ever-important duty of making arrangements, with the help of the Table Manager, for popsicles to be available at the field each week. This volunteer oversees the distribution of popsicles to players, and if there are extras, to non-playing siblings. They also may need to tidy up discarded wrappers in the distribution area.
Field Walkers assist the Table Manager by checking that the coaches are at their field with their teams. They also carry messages and/or supplies between the HSSL Table and the teams.
Pre-Season Assistants work with our Directors to get ready for each season. These volunteers may be asked to pickup the T-shirt order, help load Team Bags, distribute postcards to Home schooling venues, etc. (In short, these lovely folks will help us keep our sanity!) This is a great way to "learn the ropes" of running Home School Soccer. Perfect for anyone who is thinking of joining the Board of Directors.
Team Photographer works during 1-2 sessions at mid-season to take team and individual player photos. This volunteer must have access to a digital camera that will take a SD card. If possible, they may also assist the Directors in uploading the photos to the internet.
Team Moms/Dads step in as needed to assist their child’s coaches, and are invited (not required) to attend the Coaches' meeting on the Thursday prior to the start of the season. Team parents takes role and distributes name tags at the beginning of the session. They may need to escort a child/children to the restroom, keep order among the children and/or help organize players for drills. They may even be asked to stand in as a substitute Assistant Coach if one of the coaches is unavailable that day. Many Assistant Coaches often start out as Team Moms/Dads as they learn HOW to coach soccer.
